House passes handicapped student bill

LANSING (AP) - A bill to improve an educational program for handicapped students in Ypsilanti is headed for the Michigan Senate.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Perry Bullard, D-Ann Arbor, was approved 104-0 by the House.

The bill would amend the state School Code to allow the Estabrook Elementary School to build a new wing for a special education program for students confined to wheelchairs.

It would also authorize the Washtenaw County Intermediate School District to lease the school from the Ypsilanti School District. The $1-a-year lease is needed to conform to a legal technicality before $4.6 million in bonds can be sold to pay for the Estabrook wing.
