Ann Arbor High Girl Tops National Field In Essay Competition

Mary A Stevens, 16-year-old Ann Arbor High School senior, will receive a $500 grand prize this week as winner of a national essay contest.

Miss Stevens, an all-“A” student, is the daughter of Prof, and Mrs. Albert K. Stevens of 1228 Olivia Ave.

Her essay was on the assigned topic, “How Can We Protect Our American Heritage of Personal Freedom?”

Robert Granville, head of the high school English department, said that this is the first time an Ann Arbor High student has been top winner in a national contest to his knowledge.

Miss Stevens already has two other essay prizes. She recently was named city winner of the Ann Arbor Board of Realtors’ contest on the topic, “What The Bill of Rights Means To Me.”

She received $100 in prize money in that contest and $50 last spring for a “Scholastic” magazine writing award.

The Ann Arbor High Parent-Teachers Association will receive a $50 prize, also in the latest contest, which is sponsored by the Holmes-Darst Coal Corp. of Knoxville, Ky. Ann Arbor Fuel Co. is the local dealer.

A total of $1,000 is to be distributed among 20 winners of the nationwide contest.
