According to a Washington telegram of the 7th arrangements had been made to send a boat fifty miles down the Potomac to stop expected infected vessels from Cuba at that point. The authorities did notintend to allow the vessels, iL infected, to approach nearer Washington, A Washington telegram of the 8th 8ays the Board of Army Oflicers who reeently assemblod in Washington to revise the United States army regulations had eompleted their work. There was nothing in the raport of the Board that enlarged the powers of the General of the Army or curtailed the jurisdietiou of the Secretary of War. Pkssident Hayes has cornmuted the sentonce of death, reeently passed by Mr. Maynard, late United States Minister to Constantinople, on an American citizen found guilty of murder la Egypt, to imprisonment for life. Buek. On the night of the 7th a Utica (N. Y.) man nameii G. W. Knapp committed suicide by jumpin into the rapids of the American Falls at Niágara, a short distance abovi; the preeipice. DüRiNG August 13, 300,000 bushels of grain were shifped from New York to Europe. In the Eastern States on the 8th nominations for Congress were made as follows: Fourth Connecticut District, W. H. Barnutn, Democrat, and Congressman Frederick Miles, Republiean; Tweuty-ninth New York, E. S. Lapham, Eepublican; Fourth New Jersey, llenry S. Ilarris, Democrat; Twenty-seeond New York, Conijressman Warner Miller, Republkan; Sixth New Jersey, Phineas Jones, Republiean. Small-pox prevails in the city o'f Camden, N. J., toan alarmina; extent, and on the 8th the Board of Edueation determined to close the public schools for one month. This was thought to be necessary, as the great majority of the cases reported had beea amon children, and it was with a hope ol preventtng its spread through tlieir mingling in the class-rooms that this actiou was taken. There were sixty cases of the disease in the city. On the 8th the Manhattan Market, situated between Thirty-fourth and Thirtyfirth streets, on Eleven th avenue, New York, was entirely destroyed by flre. Tlie building covered 160,000 square feet of ground, and eost originally $1,300.000. The Massachusetts Prohibitionists held tlieir State Convention at Worcester on the 8th and nominated a full State ticket, headed by Charles Almy for Governor. Charles Ltvingston is attempting to fast forty-two days, and is on exhibitionin Brooklyn, N. T. He completed his second day of the fast on the evening of the 8th. An ordinance was lately adopted by IJie Board of Aldermen of New York City requiring all druggists and other persons engaged ia compounding phsicians' prescriptions to keep all poisonous substances separate from harmless drugs, and in an apartment provided especially for the purpose, which is to bear in large letters a sign with the word "Poison" thereon. The department is to be kept securely locked in drug-stores and dispensariqs, and is to be opened only when necessary for the fillingof prescriptions, in the presence of the person beariug the prescription. On the 8th the National Democratie Executive Comtnittee met in New York and approved the movement to reconcile the differences in Virginia by the substitution of a sin le Electoral ticket for the two in the field, and expressed confldence that it would receive the support of all Virginians who deeire the election of Hancock. The followiug Congressional nominations were made on the 9th- all Republicana : Seventeenth Pennsylvania, General J. M. Campbell; Se veuth Pennsylvania, Congressman William Godshalk; Suventh New Jersey, Congressman Lewis A. Brigham; Third Counecticut, Congressman J. T. Wait. A fuiíious and destructive noi'theast sale swept along the New Jersey coaston the 9th, causiug much damage to dockage and shipping. The wind blew at the rate of sixty miles au hour. A Hakkisbukg (Pa.) new.-paper reporter secured remarkably accurate particular of var.ous burirlarles, and published thein some time in advance of the discovery of the crimes by the victima thereof. A detective was placed on the young man's track, and in a few days he was under arrest. He confessed to several burlaries and was sent to the penitentiary for od" year. O.v the night of the lOth a collision occurred betweea several Newark (X. J.)' Republican clubs aud some c.tizens of Harr:son. A few days since two colored men were Impa'nelea in the Grand Jurv of the Louisville (Ky.) Criminal Court, and one colored man served during tlie day on a petit jury. Recent heavy rains have done much ilaniage to tlie tol'aceo erop in many counties of Virginia, particularly along the river bottoms. The touacco-worm has aleo been at work, and the erop will, it is said, be the smallest raised in Virginia for many years. Ax east-bound express train on the Indiannpjlis & St. Louis Kailway was thrown Trom the track on a bridge thirty feet liieh, near Terre Haute, Ind., on the night of the 8th. Geors;o Morris, conductor, was killed and several passeugers were injured.
