The recent election rung the political doath knell of John Kelly, head and leader of Tamiiuiny Hall organization. His idiiisyncrasies will no louger lead the pafty to (Uféat, nor will his abilitiesaid it toward success. That John Kelly has great abiütics no one who knows hira personally or by reputation can doubt. He is a wonderfully able man, a thorough orgauizer and a man that can bind his followers together and keep them uniied solely by his own powers. He is a man f high in'CRrity also. But to offset all good qualitiee as a leader he is supremey selflih. His views must be adopted, his linee of policy followed, or he will "bolt," and aid the opposition. Tuis Mr. Keliy (lid last year when he ran on his own ticket to defcat Mr. liobison. He defeatcd Gov. Robinson simply bccause the (lovernor had not favored Tammany men as Mr. Kelly thought they deserved. He helped materiallyto defeat Gen. Han-cock iiot dircctly nor, as wc tbink, intentionully, but by a selfish course in forcing the regular democracy to give to Tammany the patronage claimcd by it. The sole end of the Tammany polilical organizaron is political preferment. lts leaders are bound tohold the most lucrativo offices the city government affords. TUey do not seek official positions f mm the federal government, since the city offers fartmore tempting biit. Henee the unseeinly scramble for municipal posit ii ns. Henee the unpatriotic carelcssness of national success for their party. With Tammany it is "Give us the city flrst the country af terwards." In their fight for the city Mr. Kelly and his followers so disgusted the people of the city that he lost to the democracy at least 20,000 votes. The candidate for Mayor, Mr. Grace, was eleoted by a very small majority - less than 2,000, when he should have had at least 40.000. Hancock 's majority was not as high as the Republicans admitted it would be. Mr. Kelly, by his scliish tactics, bas killed himsclf with the Democracy. Throw him overboard. It may defeat us, but give him influence, trust him, and it is defeat sure, so cast him out as a man who cares nothing for county, state or party, only for the city, his Tammany organization and himsclf. -
