A committee was appointed early in the present year by the pioneer society to eugage some person or peisons to compile aud publibh the history of Washtenaw county. This committee is known as the historical committee and is composed of three of the best citizens of the county, men who are thoroughl interested in preserving the histopy of the lives and acts of the pioneers of the county; they are also men of experience, of literary taste.aud excellent judgment. For several months they labored earnestly to engage with competent and responsible parties to sarry out the enterprise. They conferred with several flrrus but not until Sept. 30, 1880, did they make permanent arrangements for ihe publication of this county's history. Upon that date the committee, after a careful exaniination of the plan of the historical work of Chas. C. Chapman and Co., Chicago, made a contract with tbem to compile and publish the history of Washtenaw county. Below we give the contract made by the commitiee with Messrs. Chapman & Co. Ann Arbor, Sept. 30, 1880, We, the nndersigned, historical committee of the pioneer society of Washtenaw county, having examined the plan of historical publications adopted by Chas. C. Chapman & Co., of Chicago, III., hereby give our official approval of the same, and recommend them to the pioneers and residents of this county as worthy of their confidence and patronage as compilers and publishers of its history. We do also, as instiucted by resolution of said society, give them access to ihe recoriis and ar3hives of the society in the hands and under the supervisión of its secretary. Thomas Holmes.
