John Renwick, a few years previous to Lis death, by request of the writer of this history : "The firat impression 1 hiul of tlie township of Northtield was In traveling ihrougu the pouth part of the town on the old Indian trail frotn Plymouth to Aan Arbor, in the year 1827. The to%vnship was in a state of nature except what was acttled by BeDJamin Sutton, and Muses Allen. Mr. Benj. Sutton was the pioneer ' of the town, having settled on bis farm n 1824. He cut bis way frotn the river ; Hougc. Mr. Suttou possessed all the j quirements of the pioneer. First, a strong robust constitution. a (juick, deserving, and intellcctual niind, and a pcrseverance that uever fnltered. He was a man of j uucommon liospiiaüty Itis house was a home for all tbc pioueers that passed into that 8ection of the country.
