In tho tables of electlon returns, tax63 paid, etc, in the Btate of Michigan, one coimty oftener laeks figures Uien displays them. It is lsle Royale. Secretar? of State Jenney has recentlv ceeeived a very interestiag letter from E. T. "Wells, township clerk of Minong, lsle Royale county. He stiltes that vacancifis have existed for nearly 10 years in the county' clerkship and several other oiBces, whicb there is no way of lillir.g at the present time. less otlice-holders caa doublé up thelr duties. He give? tliis as the reason vrhy documenta, notifications, etc, received ;it Isle Royale trom Urne to time, have not been attended to; and he furthernaore explaine what has been done to facilítate the township and coimty business. Tliey have been without a postmaster fr more tliau a year, and the gentleman aelected for the office baa not yet received his commission, ExceptiBg kik mail in Jannary, not a line lias been received f rom outsiile sinee October 22, 1880, and no boats go to the Lsland unless specially engagexl for that purpose by the Minong tnining company, andthis happens only twic-e or thrice a year. The last mail was oblai ned likethat of previousyears, by raising subscription? to pay the mes8enger who urougnt ït. 11e is tne only physician tliere, and has beenwell knovvn to the, postmaster at Grand Porfeage, whither ihe mail was sent from Iloughton. Theri.sk tolife wliile crossing Luke Superior in the winter is very gfreat, and few persons will attempt the joumey unlees for extraordinary pay. At the date of the census on June 1, 1880, Isle lïoyal coatained 55 Inhabitant, men, vvonien and ohildren, 14 of whom have k-ftsince tlialdnte. There were only 11 legal votéis, the reinaining men being malnly of foreign birth and incapable oí holding o3iue. This creates the vacancias alluded to. At the general election, November 2, there were no printed tickets. Xo i n:vspapers eould be found to give the iiaines of eandidates; no documents or autlientic statements of any kind to post up the electora. ïhe little they had loarned was from private sources, long preyious to the election; Uieless tliey then prepared a ballot-box and voted tor president and viee president direct. James A. Garfield and Chester A. Artliur received 9 votes each; Winield 8. Hancock and Wm. II. Hnglish, 2 rotes each; E. T. "Wells for county clerk, L. II. Chadbourne for prosecuting attornej and register of dewls, Andrew Buffer for fish inspector, eacli received 11 votes. Mr. Wells inquires of the secretary of state, and the questJon has been referred to Attorney General Van Uiper, whether iüch in election is Talid; whether such offlcera can hold their jositiims, and whether a township clerk can becomea county clerk ? The unfortunate out-of-the-world situation of Lsle Royale places the people umlei many inconveniences, and niakcs somt' things Ltnposflible vrhleh are practicable tn other localities.
