Stanley, D. D., L. L. D., whose death at the deanery of Westminster last evening (July ÏS) was a son of Bishop Fdward Stanley, and was bom at A1derly, Cheshire, England, December 13, 1815, being thus nearly 66 years of age at his death. He attended llugby school for five years, and in 1834 gained a scholarship at Baliol college, Oxford; took the Newdigate prize for his poem "The Gypsies," the Ireland scholarship, and a flrst class in classics in 1837, and later various other prizes of note; graduated at the univergity lage i 1838; took orders in the church of England, afliliating witli the "Broai i-iiurch" party; held various prominent church collegiate positions up to 1854, when he became chaplain to Princa Albert, and subsequently in 1862 to Queeu Victoria and the Princo of Wales; declined the archbishopric of Dublin in 18C3, and was installed dean of Westminster Jan. 9. 1864; and waa elected rector of tha university of St. Andrews in 1874. He made a tour of the east, visiting Egypt and Palestine, in 1852- '53, and in 186„land '62 was prominent as a defender of free thought in the church of England. For years he has beeu looked upon as the best representative of the progressive school of British theology. In 1862 he married Lady Augusta Bruce, daughter of the late earl of Elgin and an intímate friend of tne queen, who died in February, 1876. He was a voluminous author and a valued contributor to reviews and periodicals, besides publisher of many notable sermons. He was a member of the translation company for the revisión of the bible.
