To make timber pleaüful and to render our climate more genial we must reclothe all rugged, broken land, roeky crests - in fact, eveiy acre that is not cultivated or is cultivated at a loss- with valuable forest trees. . First- All ravines and steep hillsides, all laad too rocky to be thorougbly cleared of stone at:d ploughed, should be devoted to trtes. Second - Protecting belt3 of timber should be planted wnerever buildings, orchards, gardens, etc, are exposed to cold, s weeping winds. Third- The banks of streams, ponds, opea dltches), etc, should be so planted with trees that they will be protected from abrasión byfloods and rapid currents. Fourth- AU public roads should be belted by graceful, stately trees. We should preserve, improve and exter.d our existing forests by keeping up a constant succession of young growing trees of the best varieties. Todo this it is necessary: First- To allow no stock to run in wood-lots for the purpose of forage. This should be a rule inflexible and reien tless. Second- Young growth in foresta should be thinned out moderately and judiciously. Worthlessvarieties should te cut out, and the valuable sorts trimmed up so thatthey wiU grow tall, forming trunk rather than branches. Third- Tiuiber should be cut with intelligent reference to future growtu. Valuable trees that you wish to propágate should be cut in the spring. Those that you wish to extermínale should be cut in August,
