It may be interesting news for the taxpayers of this couaty that sinea Thursday, December 29, a smail army of trampa have been arrested. Tliey have been fed and provided with a place to remata over night at the jail, and those not sent to Ionia or returned to Jail, liave been permitted to get outside of the Corporation as quickly as their legs could carry them. It would astomsh Ihe people if they could but look over some of the justice dookets and note the number of cases commenced witliiu a week against A. B. and C. Seven-eighths of the expense giowing out of the criminal business s bein incurrcd llnough the ARREST OF TRAMPS. so called. And it does not seem to make any difference either whether tbey have committed an offense " against the peace and dignity of the people of the state of Michigan." AU are served alike. ín some cases their arrest is iustifiaWe. in others it is all wrong But it is singular how some constables eau Kent such a person, aad to think tbat occasionally one alludes his persuier, is still more singular. A man may be a tramp, but unless be is creatitig a disturbance, or has commi'.ted some crime, it is poor policy to run bim in simply because be is a tramp, and yet it is being done EVERT DAT. In consequence of tbe numerous arrests, costs upon costs are being piled up, and tbe next board of supervisors wili bave a nice little bilí to audit. The Democrat is the only paper iu the city that bas ha the courage lo speak out against certai officials, who, it would seein, have conuived together to replenish TIIEIIt EXCIIEQUEK at ihe expense of the tax payers, not only of Washtenaw county, but of the whole state. It is only a short time ago that a constable who was engaged in conversatiou with a business man ou Huron streel, made the statement that he would " continue to make arrests as long as he could find a justice tosENTEncE men to Ionia." The tramp is a king comoared to such an unprincipled scouudrel, and he is less to be feared than tte offlcer who would make such a remark.
