Our readers havo all heard of a "London fog." A copy of the London Daily Telegraph of Feb. 6, now before ua gives one an enlarged idea of iti denseness. It feil upon the city on Friday night, Feb. 3d, and continued, with fluctuating iutensity, until Sunday morning, seriously interfering with business and travel. Many persona lost their way, and one lady is supposed to have inadvertently walked into the Thames. Business men, expecting to reach the city by 10 o'clock, a. m., did not reach their offices until noon. Market gardeners who should have been at Covent garden early in the morning, reached there at noon or af ter. At evening, a dense, aulphurous mist came down, penetrating everywhere. Street lampa were practically useless, and link boya and torch-bearers, with erery conceivable species of lantern, from the farthing candle to the flaring "tarred rope," were in requisition on the principal thoroughfares. Cabmen took torchbearers to their sides, or else, with lamp in hand, walked at their horaes' heads. Many, in crosaiug the public squares, lost themselves when halfway across, and were only reacucd rom a wandering maze by a friendly policernan. Business pursuits, domestic shopping, attendance on places of amusement, were very much interfered with, and many who set out for the theater, after finding their homes again, were content to remain with the home circle. At the theaters, the haze in some cases filled tb e auditorium in advance of the spectators, who could onlv discern the characters flitting across the stage like ghosts, trying to utter their several parts. A performance of Hamlet, annouuced to take place at the Imperial, was abaudoned at the last moment; and in the southwest part of the city, including Kensington, Brixton and Claphanjj trafïic f or a part of Saturday evening was abandoned altogether. Such is a "London fog."
