Mr. II. P. Hubbard, of New Haven, Conn., has prepared, compiled, edited and published two volumes containiug the ñames and descriptions of more than 34,000 newspapers aud 20,000 banks in all the quarters of the world . The work contains 2,593 pages, and not one but contains much interestiug and valuable in formation. We do not quesüon the author's statement that "it has táken a large forcé of correspondents, copyists, trans - lators, and writers fully seventeen niontLs to arrange, collecl, revise, and prepare for the press" this mass of material. The marvel is not that it took so long, but rather that it did not take longer. It makes one's bruin whirl to tlnnk of a man's deliberately undertaking so colossal a task as that invoved in the ulation of fact for these volumes. It is a coatribution to reference literature of genuine merit, furnished with carefully prepared indices and niaps, and no fault can be foutid with its mechanical execuAon. The work contains lists of all the newspapers, magazines, and quarterlies published in every empire, kingdom and nation, together with the names and looations oí the leading responsible banks and banking institutions ot erery country in the world, with maps and full descriptions of the several states and territories of the United States. The bitter nrtieles have been prepared with care specially for the work, most of the coutributions emanating from residents of the states or terrüories respectively described.
