The celebrated Bowland HUI Btartled his congregation one Sunday morning by a sharp illustration. Said he, "My friends, the other day I vas going down the street and I saw a drove of pigs following a man. Of course I was interested, my curiosity being greatly excited, and so I determined to follow. I did so, and to my great surprise 1 saw them follow him to the slaughter house. With some there seeined a little hesitancy; but they all ünally went into the enclosure. I was anxious to know how thi3 was brought about, and so I said to the man, 'My friend, how did you manage to induce those pigs to follow you here V 'O, rtid you not seè ?' said the man, 'I had a basket of beans under my arm ; so I occasionally dropred a íew as I went along and so they follow me!' Yes, and so I thought the Devil has his basket of beans under his arm ; and he drops them as he goes, aud what multitudes he induces to follow him by a few beans, to an everlasting slaughter-house." There ís no more absurd cant than that the culture of the mind favors the culture of the heart. What do operas and theatres do for the moral elevation of society ?
