The followlng incident is related of the flrst appearance of Miss Clara Louise Kellogg upon the American stage: Brignoli was at that time the favorite tenor of Xew York, and had consented to sing at her debut, alfcheugh expressing a poor opinión of Americans as singers. 'hey came on together, and lie.was fullyexpeeted tojwarble.quitean installment of Itallian affection at her, instead of which he had arranged with the orchestral gang, and he simpiy chucked out a couple of bars and came to a dead stop. Kellogg had a velvet jacket on her back, an oriental embroidered cap on her head, and the worst stage f right on her face one ever saw. She opened her mouth. The venomous old big flddle croaked loudly, all the little üddles squeaked, and one just heard the faintest squeak out of Clara Louise. On went the accompaniment, and the debutante feit the ground slipping from under her feet. She got astray. She was sinking deeper, when from out an orchestra seat, three r jw?. away, came the strain she was struggling with, clear, tras, sweet as a lark. That helping voice steadied her, gave her heart, the right key, the proper phrase. She looked, and there she beheld Carlotta X'atti half raioed on her seat, beating time with her little gloved hand. Patti's bright face was the beacon for Kellogg's bark. And Kellogg took heart and pitched in and sung out, and Carlotta feil away when she could go it alone, havingperformed a graceful act.
