Where the water was cool and deep, There were featnery f eras 'twist the moss; stooes, And ffray was the old wellsweep. He left hls carrlage alone; Nor could coachman or footman teil Why the master stopped In the dasty road To drink at e way-side well. He swayed with hls gloyed hands The well-sweep creaking and slow, White from seam and ecar in the bucket's side The water plaBhed hack below. He litted it to the curb, And bent down to thé backet's brim; No f arrows of time or care had marked The face that looked back at him. He saw but a f armer'a boy As he stooped o'er the brira to drink, And ruddy and tanned was the laugbiog face That met bis over the brink. The eyes we snnny and clear, And the brow nndimmed by care, While from under the brim of the old strawhat Strayed caris of chestnat bair. He tnrned away with a sigb, Nor could coacbman or footman teil Wby the master stopped in his ride that day To drink at the way-side well.
