. Oíd Williarn Sharpney U3ed to tell his grandson that the characters of Irving's "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" were taken f rom real hfe. Ichabod Crane was Sam Young, a pedagogue and pettifogger, who went no one knevv whither; Brom Bones was Abraii Van Tassel, long since called to his fathers, who lived three miles from Tarrytowu, and Katrina Van Tassel- wel!, she waa Katrina Van Tassel. Irving, who made the story what it is, occupiea the humblest grave in Sleepy, Hollow Cemetery. Aplaiumarbleslab at the head of it bears the simple inscription: "Washington Irving, born April 3, 1773;died November 18, 1859." Turee oaks and a cedar shade the plot, whicb is thick with the graves of the Irvings. The relic-hunter has left his mark on Irviug's grave. The heaclstone and footstone have been chipped off until they present a ragged appearance. The plot, which is surrounded by a hedge, looks down on the place where the oíd bridge crossed the river. At Irving's hoine, SuiinysKte,. everything is just as it was when he died, except the pond, which is no lpnger seen. When Irving died he wished no coatly stone raised to honor hino.
