A most caref ully prepared report of the populationof the various countries of the world is that issued from time to time by Drs. Behni and Wagner. A new edition of this publicationhasjust appeared, the previous one havirig been Í3sued two years. Within thia interval census have been taken in H.largenmnber of countries, and the resulta of these are embodied in this work. Bat in the case of some countries no officistatiatic3 are to be had, and for such al countries the figures presented are necessarily the result of compulatiou or even eopjecture. The report of the population of China for iustance, is bui an eatimate, while that of Central África eau be little better than a guess. The resulta given by Behm and ner are, nowever, general iy accepteu as the most trustworthy published. The total population üf the globe is now reported by thern at 1,433,800,000 Axcording to their last report it was 1,455,900,000. The difíerence would indícate a decrease of 22,000,000 but as a matter fact there has, according to these authorities, been an increase of more than 33,000,000. This la explained by the fact that the population ot ChiDa has been very much over-es timated heretofore. In the last issue of this work it was given at 434,000,000 ; it is now put at 379,000,000. In fact, in those countries alone in which census have been taken the official returns show an aggregate increase of 32,000,000 during the preceding interval of ten years. The nuinber of people iuha'oiting the larger divisions of the globe, aa given by Behm and Waguer, are as t'ollows: Europe, 327,743,000; Asia, 795,501,000; and Polynesia, 4,232,000 ; Tolar regions, 82,000. Kussia is credited with 83,000,000 inhabitants ; China, 370,000,000 ; Japan, 36,000,000, and Brltish India, 252.000,000.
