The country has long aeknowledged Iho advantages conferred apon trade and agriculture by the work of the Signal Service, and those who daily consult the predictious of Oíd Pxobábilitiea. while disrtsfll fr i-nïi af fimp. níliíiih lint onlv the Hsefulnesü, but the neccnsity for the work in another direction nut so gcnerally known. it is tryiug to do as much for shipping and commerce as it has for the agricultural and interior üiterests. Gen. Hazen, the Chief Signal Oüicer, has taken thia matter vigorously in hand, and mamly through Iris efforts and intelligent direction the department of maiitime meteorological reporta of the Signal Service is becoming daily of greater value to the ahippirg interest It is the intention of Gen. Hszen to develop this work to the greatest possiblepoint of usefulness. The Signal Service has, therefore, to depend almost entirely upon the merchant service lor lts marine meteorological reports, and ractically, masters and mates must do this work for the Signal Service.
