Coal In Java
The practïcability of utilizing the vaiious known coal deposita in Java and other parts of the Netherlanda' Indian Archipalago continúes to meet with attention at f,he hauds of the D.itch Government; thur far, however, without substantial results. The coal-flttidí of the Ombillion territory are attracting special attention, and possibly a scheme for sitisfactorily workiijg these deposita may ere long be mooted. At present, the only mine iu active work is the so-p.alled "ürenje Na:-8iu" mine, situated at I'engion, a district of southeast Borneo. The production of this mine during the year 1881 amounted to 5 345 ton? of block coal, and 2,731 tons of stnall coal. The quality of this coal iá sigilar to that of fair Auatralian, and in wtrking the mines no more tban the usual precautions have to be taken agiünst the explosión of fire-damp and other acc'deats of a like Tinture.
