Large audiences witnessed the ñnal erformances of the new border drama, 'Ranch 10," and f rom the amount of en;husiastic applause it evoked they were evidently muoh pleased with it. The scenio and mechanical effects produced are startlingly realistic, and sume of the iableau are marvels of beauty. The play s sensational to a degree. Mr. Meredith is an exceflent actor, and has surrounded himself with a good company.- Indianapolia Sentinel. Monday evening two painters who had ust arrived f rom Detroit, asked an officer at the depot to be taken to jail and henee to Ionia. They were infonned hat unless they had committed Bomo crime they would not be sentenced. The cind-hearted constable told them where ihey could go and steal a little tobáceo, when they would be arrested and their wish gratifled. The painters heeded the advice, stole some tobáceo but when en into custody, the grooorymau refused to prosecute them. Prof. John A. Nichols, the ürst prinoipal of the high school and a gentleman well known throughout tbe state, died of diseaBe of the brain at hiB residence on West Huron etreet, Sunday morning, in his 63rd year. He was bom in Onondaga couuty, N. Y., in 1820. At the age of 12 years his parents removed to Ogden, N. Y., where the professor received his preliniinary education. He subsequently taught school at Lima and Oberlin, O. In 1844 he carne to Washtenaw county and located at Saline, and still later removed to tbis city where he enjoyed a large and extended acquaintance. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon. A large audience gathered at the Baptist church on Tuesday evening to hear Hon. G. W. Bain, of Kentucky, on "Our country, our homes and our duty." We can do no justice to the eloquence of the orator or to his argumenta. His masterly treatment of the eubjeot uhould stirevery hearer to work faithfully for the eafety of our country and our homes, by the demolition of an educational saloon system, which is supported at four timeg the expense of our common schools, and whose only tendency is against the virtue nd intelligence by which only a republio is perpetuated. The next speakers announced for the "Lever course" are Mr. Hunt, of Boston, for the 17th; Prof. Geo. E. Foster, M. P., of Canada, for the 22d; followed by John B. Finch, of Nebraska. Mr. Bain's notice of these speakers gave some idea of the rich treat in store for those who shall be fortunaU enough to henr them. M. c. On the 2d inst. the doors of the beautiful temple for the dead, at Forest hill cemetery, were flrst thrown opeii for their reoeption, and funeral services first held within its walls. After the impressive service of the Episcopal church, all expressed themselves pleaaed with the now vault, as snrpassinsf anything they had vet geeu ; and all those mourning the dear ones lying there were grateful to the management for erecting ao pleasant a transient resting place for their dead, ere they are consigned to mother earth.
