Several years ago I became a eonvert to flat culture for' potatoes, and every season conyinces me that this mode is preferable to the forming of hills around the plants. This season, being a very moist one in this section, fully denionstrated with me that in moist as well as dry seasons flat culture is the better of the two. Just across the fence f rom my potato patch was a field ot my neighbor's, of about four aeree, plantad about ten days before mine. The ground is alike on both patches- clayed loam. My neighbor manured more liberally than I did. He adopted the hillino1 method of culture, and I the flat method. In the early part oí the season his raado a much more vigorous grovrth than mine; in faot the foliage in his field covered the ground before mine had begun to grow. As the season advanced mine gained in growth upou his, and maintained greener foliage longer. His npened about a week ahaad of mine, but while his erop averaged 180 mshels to the acre mine averaged 200 bushels to the acre. There was seveuty bushels difference, upon soil similar, his having the advantage of more manure than mine. I consider that flat culture requires less labor than hilling, produces heavier crops, and the quality is just as gOod, with all other conditions the samo.- Cor. Countr-y Gentleman. The rule prevails this senson of a plain fabric for the basque and train, with figured stuff for the petticoat front, vet this is somotimcs revcrsed, when very grand brocaded satins are used for the reater part of the dress, and the petti3oat front of plain satin is nearly concealed by a Greek drapery of the brocadc. The nuw trains with two points are ilhistrated in these tlresscs of brocaded gold and pink on white satin groiind, while the petticoat is of white satin, with two puns of red velvet at the foot. These doublo pointed trains are to be carried on the arm in the dance, and the satin skirt beneath extends all round and is fully trimmed.
