A large lioness called Juno, belonging to a circus, created quite a scnsation at Frankford, where the show is in winter quarters, by attacking and badly injuring Mr. Martin, the keeper. The supposed cause of the attackisjealousy. In June, 1882, another lioness became the mother of three cubs, and Juno, who occupied an adjoining cage during the travels of the show, became mucn interested in them. Last fall the er of the oubs died, and since that timo Juno's interest in them increased, till of late she became so jealous of the cubs that when any one approached them she would become funous with rage. Just before dark the other dav Mr. Martin fed the animáis, and after giving the cubs their share paused a moment to fondle them. This incensed Judo and she raised such a disturbance that Mr. Martin approached her cago to juiet her, but stumbled and fell igainst tho bar.s. Instantly slie teised lis right arm above the elbow. Martin, n order to protect his head and body, rrasped the bottom of the cage with his eft hand. The lioness held his right arm with one paw and struok through the bars at bis head with tlic other. A lad named Donahtie, aided by an iron bar, tried to makc Juno drop Martin, but his efforts were in vain, and ho left to procuro assistanco. Beforo he could return, however, with the disired help, Martin managed to release himself f rom the grasp of the animal, when she, by a desperate effort, forcedherway through the bars of her cage. By thi.s time quite a number of men, who had been summoncd by the lad Donahue, reached the door of the apartment, but when it was made known to v.vai. ii4u tii. au uiiiu yt cv o at J 11 1; JU the room they refused to entor on account of the darkness. Mr. Martin very pluckily held his groimd, and by a judicious use of a heavy bar of iron soon cowed the lioness and drove her into her cage, which was immediately fastened and doubly secured by fitting in new bars and adding ncw braces. Martin's injuries, thongh painfnl, are not serious, and his physician says he will not lose the use of his arm. After Juno was caged it was noticed that one of the blauw boks, which was stalled in tho game apartmont, was trembling with fear and that tears were trickling down its face. Ten minutes later u was dead.
