Death Of Dr. Chase

The Demoobat is oalled upon this week to chronicle the death of Dr. A. W. Chase, at one time one of Ann Arbor's leading citizens. For some time the doctor was in feeble health, and he peacefully passed away at his home in Toledo, Monday afternoon, the 16th inst., at the age of 68 years. Dr. Chase was born in Cayuca couuty, N. Y., in 1817. When 11 years of age his parents located near Buffalo, where the subject of this noticc reoeived a limited tducation in a log school -house. At the age of 17 he left New York and found employment on the Maumee riyer, in the meautime devoting his spare moments to study. In 18tó he looated at Dresden, O. From the days of his boyhood the doctor always evinced a desire to study medicine. After many wanderings he settled in this city. He attended lec tures during the years 1857-8, in the interim graduating from the eclectic institute of Cinoinnati. Prior to 1869 he traveled over a large portion of the union, practicmg his profession and aoquiring useful knnwledge which proved a good foundatioQ for the wonderful receipt book which af terward gained such great celebrity. His firat edition, like all subsequent ones. proved a great success. In 1864 he built a brick block on the corner of Main and Oatherine streets. The business continued to inorease, and in 1868 an addition of two stores in width was constructed which were dedicated with appropriate cere monies. A few years ago Dr. Chase was considered one of the wealthiest citizens of the place, but reverses carne and he died a poor man. He was long identifled with the Methodist Episcopal church, to which he gave large suma of money . The funeral took place in this city Thursday, under the direction of the Odd Fellows, of which he was an honored member. Dunng the bright dayhght of his prosperity he gave liberally to the poor, who will silently drop a tear of sympathy, when they leai-n of the death of this once benevolent man.
