A good dea! has lately been said and written about the large sumswhich Sritish authors have made by the sale of theirworks. Scott obtaincd L110,X)0 for eleven novéis and nine volumes of tales; Lord Heaconslield was offered L10,000 for "Endymion;" Georsre Eliot recefved L7,000 for 'Romola;" and it is repórted that her "Lile" has already put L8,000 into tho poekets of the publishers. Tho profits of sevcral continental authors have, howevcr, been cqually substantial. Lamartine received LÜO,000 for bis history and L1,800 for "La Chute d'un Anje;" fot the manuscript of "Notre Dame" Víctor Hugo was paid L2,400; Chateaubriand made L22000 by his books; Thiers disposed of his "History of the Consulate and Empire"' for L20,000; and even Lamennais obtained on an average Lü00 for e.ich of his vohnnes. Jtldged from the pecuniary point of view, M. Eraile Zola is probably the moít successfui of living authwrs. A Paris paper to wbich he is an occasional contributor states that his income from literary work lias during the past live year8 averaged L12,000-
