In his speech on the vote of censure. Mr. Gladstone said: "The right lionj orable gentleman has dealt witli the utmost propriety and the utmost feeling ■ on tho loss wnich the country ha'S snstained in the death of General Gordon. i He stated that Genera] Gordon bad ilo; voted his life and all that mak es lito : valuable, to his sovereign and t liis country. Sir, he might even have cnlarged that eulogiuni, for the pnrpose of General Gordon was not liniilcd oyen to those great and noble objocts. Hi.s life was devoted to his soVereign, to his country and to the world. (U;n( t;i1 Gordon's sympathie were not limited by race, or color, or religión, and in point of fact he seems to havo deemed it his special honor to devoto his energies and fc risk his oxistence on behalf oi those wiHi whoni he had . no other üe than that of lnnnan s inpathy. General Gordon was a hero, and. permit me to say, a little more. He was a hero among héroes. For thcre have been men who have attained and who have deserved tho praise of heroism, whose heroism. notwithstauding, was manifested ehiefly on llic licld of battle or of other coutests, and who, when exainlned in the tenor of their personal life, were not ia all respecta heroic. But it you take ; the case of this man, pursuo him into privacy, investígate his heart and mimi, you will find that he has not proposed to himself any ideal of woalth, ] or power or even fume, but that to do i good is the object which he has proposed to himself in his wholo lif. and that for that object it is his oue dosire i to spend and be spent. Such is tha man we have lost. Tho loss is gieat indeed; but ho is not all losl; for such examples aro fruitful in tin; future, and I trust there will grow frotn the contemplating of liis oharaetor rmd deeds other men who in futuro (imes muy ('muíate liis noble and mostCül'is, lian example.
