lhe Jiji alampo, as most foreign residente in Jápan are no doubt aware, is a journal which with enlightened and advanced views combines no small degree of business enterprise. We sbould. like, however, to be informcd exaetly why (ts conductor resorted upon tho novel expedient of presenting to each recipiënt of a copy of its Sunday's issue a new handkerchief of most gauzy and substantial texture. True, the fabric i béars what we may cali a "highfulutin" square border in blue, in which ure , tailed with befitlhig modesty tho high considerations wliich contemporary conceivcs entitlo hun to public support. But we fail precisely to onderstand how he proposes to keep hiuiself by this nieans before the public eye.so to spoak. Assuming tliat we are correct in supposing the gift to bo a handkerchief, - at any rato that is the use to which most; people will devote it, wliatever the donor niay have designed for it, - has the Jiji Shimpo calraly considered the possibility of aücmpts being made to wash tbr axticleP The ornamental border is probably a fast color and will withstand water; but a simple border, bowever ornate, is ill-fltted to serve the purposes of a handkerchief. And the border is oertainly all that anyone can hope to recover from the devouring waves of the wash tub. Of course if oiir contemporary proposes to issue each morning a new handkerchief, all may yet be well; but we inak.' bold to warn him against tho dánger of trilling with the best feelings of his subscribers. Aclicnielc disgusted by the uncalled-for disappearance of the scrviceable portian of its handkerchiefs is capable of anyfhing - even of stopping its paper.
