At the dedimtion of the new Church ol the Holv Cross in H.-iltiinorc. Md., on tli Pth inst Arcbbiahop Gibbons took advan tage of the presence of a lurge number ol foreigners and spoke forcibly cm the sin: of anarehiMii that have reeen tly been de velped in America. In liis remarks on loyulty to the country he said : "The gov■inment of the United States is a govern ment for the benefit of the people. Stran gers from every pari of Tíniopp are welcome to inores. Like the sun, that shine.s for all. the gOTernment of our nountry slieds its genial rays upon all elaKses, without regard to race, nationality or religión. The glorióos banner ol our country protects nlike the hnml.le and poor, the mlghty and the ricli. Kvery ntan in the T'nitrd Siatis has an opportuuitv eamingfor himstU an honest livelihood. and ïiiuiy have opportunities of acquiring an independent fortune. The Germán population of Baltimore forms an iniinirtanr. cemservative and influcntial element, and the sanie may be snid of the Ixeriuan population throughout the United States, as well as of the other nationalit ios. They contrilmte largely to the development of the resonrees of this country, and daily augment our matoriul proaperity. Biit, is the events of the last few days in Chicago have shown, there exists in this country a sniull but turbulent clement, Anarchism, Bocialiem, Nihilisin. These men are land pirates, preying upou the industry, conimerce and trade of the country. " Their favorite weapou is dynamite. Their mission is to destroy trade rather than to build up. Instead of strengthening the hands of the government thut upholds and protcts them, they are bent upou its destruction. Instead of blessing the mother that opens her arras to welcome them, they insult and strike her. If these men had their wav, industry and trade would be paralyzed ; honest labor would be unrewarded. and gaunt poverty would stalk over the land. They have 110 conception of true liberty. They would retain for themselveg the 1 ion 's share of freedom, leavjng to others only a morsel. The citizens of the United States enjoy the amplest liberty, but it is ft liberty of law, of order and authority. Liberty without law degonerates into licenBe. We have no standing ariny in this country and I am glad of it. For such armies are a great draiu upon the resources of a country, and necessarily condemn large numbersof men to a Ufo of idleness. The strongest force of n nation lies in the laws of the land judiciously administered, and these laws are uphelu and sustained by a healthy public opinión. The strongest bulwark of a nation is found in the intelligence, virtue, and patriotism of its nativo and adopted citi.ens. So long as they love thofr country and cherish her instituí ions. and :ire readv to die for her if necessary, we will have notliing to fear from Anarcliism, Socialisiu and Nihilism.; iSocialism is a foreign plant, a noxious oxotic. which grows only In dark places, and withers and docays under the genial sun and atmosphere of the I.'nited States." The Archbishop concluded his remarks by exhorting the congregation to love their countrv and her institutions, and to do all in their power to promote her best lnterests: to avoid dangerous, forbidden societii's, to beware of aemagogueg, and not snrrender their liberty to any man or class of men, and at all times to observe the golden maxim of doing unto others as they would have men do unto them.
