Laying A Corner Stone
The corner stone of the Soldiere' Home building vu laid on the morning of the 3d but the ceremony usual on such occasions was not observed. Col. Samuel Wells, contractor Chas. Tiedke, superintendent of construction Fairfield, stone contracter Hirth, Gen. B. R. Pierce, Maj. A. B. Watson and a few others wore present and conductod the necossary preparations. A sealed copper box, 10x10 inches square and six inches deep, contained the articles placed in the cavity of the corner ■tone. On the stone itself is carved the . date of the erection of the home and the Governor'8 name, together with the natnes of the members of the Board of Managers. The box contains: Gov. Alger's first message to the Michigan Legislatura : a . fied eopy of the law authorizing the . tion of the Home; a list of the n.imes of thoso who contributed to the fund for the purchase of the Home site; a certified copy of the Michigan Manual of 1885; circulara of Grand Rapids & Indiana and Chicago & West Michigan Railroad Companies; a copy of the Big Rapids city charter from Commissioner Brown; Col.. Chas. D. Long's address delivered at the last state encampment of the G. A. R. ; "Memorial Verses" by Col. Wells, alluding I to the events which have occurred during the past century, and more especiaily during the past twenty-five years; a poem, i "Michigan, My Michigan,1' by Maj. Long; a niourning badge of Pennoyer post, G. A. , R., of Snginaw, presen ted by Col. BUss; the Michigan Central's "Facts and Figures About Michigan;" a Morton House '■ menu; the journal of the national nineteenth annual reunión of the G. A. R. at Portland ; the roster of the O. A. R. of Michigan for 1885; the official register of the Soldiers' and Sailors' association meeting at Battle Creek, and copies of the city paper. The papers, etc, were wrapped in a skin prepared for a drumhead and the box was hermetically sealed.
