General Durbin Ward, of Ohio, whose death occurred a short time ago, was a gallant soldter d uring the late war. He was teiribly wounded at the battle of Cliickamauga. General James B. Steedman ust-d to tell with a rare gusto how hesavedthe life of the brave soldier on th.it occasion. The night after the battle Steedman was ridinc past a cabin by the roadside. A woman at the fence said to hini: "There is a dead Union soldier in my house." Steedman dismountedand went in to see the dead man. lic lound him lying in a corner, covered with n blanket, where thesurgeons had abandoned him. He pulled the eovering off. stooped down and by the lijiht of a candis recognized bis old triend Cclonel Durbin Ward. He was cold and apparently lifeless. Steedman feit his pulse and l'ouml a sliulit ilntterin. Calling for hia ordei'ly, who carried a canteen of whisky, he raised the dyins man and putting the canteen to his mouth po u red a liberal quantity of the revivifyinjj fluid down his throat. The reaction carne, the suryeons wera sent tor and Durb.'D Ward was saviid.
