Erasteis Brooks, the veteran journalist of New York, died on Thanksgivmg day. Erastns Brooks was born in Portland, Me., Jan. 81, 1815. When 8 years of age he was sent to Boston and vvorked in a grocery store, obtaining the rudlments of an education by attending night school He afterwurds printed a paper at Wiscasset, Me., caljed "The Yankee." He subsequently pntered Brown university, and after graduation from that institütion be berame principal of a grnmmar school at Haverkill, Mass., and edited the Haverhill Gazette. In 1886 be was Washington cor respondent ot the New York Daily Advertiser and other papers. Soon afterwards he becama with his brother, joint editor and proprietor of the New York Express. He visited Europe in 1S45, and in 16Ö3 was elected to the state senate. He advocated divesting Koman Catholio bisho]s of the title to hold church property, whlcb involved a controversy with Archbishop Hughes, which was published. In 1856 be was the defeated candidate of tho American party for governor of New York, and afterwards joined the democratie party. In 1S72 he wüs one of the coinnussion to revise tlio state statutes.
