Two sbocks of earthquake were feit at Nlce early on the morning of February 23. Houses rocked, walks were cracked, and tenement houses were thrown to the ground. Shocks were also feit at Monte Cario and Monaco, at whiuh places they were so ievere that rocks were detached from the clitfs and prei'ipitated into the sea. The disturbance extended as far as Genoa. At the time of the shocks the Reviera, was crowdecl with English and American tourists and persons of distinction. When the first shock occurred the streets of Nice were fairly thronKed with persons in ba 11roora costumos returning to their homes frora the last carnival ball of the winter season. To these the earthquako catno with peculiar terror. At the same time two distinct shocks wero feit in Toulon. The fint sliork was of fifteen seconds duration and the seeond of twelve. The uiovement was from W68t to east. At Cnnues three shocks were feit at the same hour. There was also a sliijlit Bhock at ilarseilles. The walls of a number of houses in that city were crucked. Shocks were also feit nt Legliorn and Milan and several places in the Prorince of Genoa, Italy. The flrst ehock, which was very violent, lasted for % minute. The second aud tbird shocks were not as heavy as the tirst. Many persons rushed to tne seashore for safety. Kobody was injured. At Njce many casualties wero caused. Beveral houses were destroyed, and a number oL persons were burieÜ in the ruins. Ihe whole ot the Italian Reviera was devastated. At Noli, on the Guit of Gonoa, and not fnr from Í3avona. severnl houses Eell and fifteen persons were killed. Six were killed and thirty injured at Oneglia, also on the Gulf oí Genoa. At bianoMarinq, near Oneglia, scores of people were killed and hundreds injured. Kully one-third of the town was def troyed. At Cervo, near Di.ano-Marino, 300 persons were killed by being buried in the ruius of falling buildings. At Turin the churehes Buflered severely. In tho neighborhood of Dordigera miiny houses feil, killing the inmntes. At öavona eight persons woro killed and fifteen others injured. Immense damago was done to property. A second and severer shock was feit at Genoa, Pavía, Lucca, Cuneo, Albessola, Torto Manriso, Onegia aud Nolis. The chocks affected a wide and eccentrio area. Reports aro vague and conflicting. but seeras to have been no danger In iuland towns. The Princo of Wales being at Caunes, the queen becnmeexceedingly anxiousconcerning him when she learnedof the earthquake. Her Ma.jesty nt once telegrphed him. The prince immediately telegraphed a reassuring reply, saying thnt he was well and uniniured. The government, in consideration of tho popular concern about the safety of the prince. have requested him by telegiviph to return to Éngland as soon as he eau convenieotly "to allay anxiety."
