The Chief Signal Offiiter furnishes, when practicable, f or benefit of the general public nnd those industries dcpenclent to a great rxtent upon wealher conditions, the "Indieations," whieU are prepared at nis oflice daily, at 1 a. m., for the twenty-four hours commencing at 7 a. m. These weather forecasta are telegraphed to many signal service stations, railway oflBcials and others, and are so worded as to be readily conmiunicatcd to the public by mean-; of flags and symbola. The flags adopted for this purpose are four in number, and of the form and dimensious given below: INTEHTRETATIOU OF 8IGSA.L3. No. 1, White Flag, sis feet square, always indicates clcar or fair wcather, no rain. No. 2, Blue Flüsj. six feet square, iudicatos rainor snow. No. 8, Black Triangular Flap, six feet at the base and six feet in length. ulways referí to temperature. When placed above or before Nos. 1 or 2 it imlicutes wanner weather. When placed below or after Nos. 1 or 2 it indícate? colder weather. No. 4, Cold Wave Fi:t:.r.six feet square, indicates the approach of a Bndden and decided fall in teñiperature. This Bignal is usually ordered np at leist 24 houra ia ndvance of the cold wave. It is not displayed uniese a tempernture of 4T degrees, or tess, is expected; nor is Üag No. 3 displayed with it. When displayed on flag poles the signals shoüld be arranged to read downward. When displayed from horizontal supports a small strciimcr should always be attuehed to indícate the noint from which the siïnuls are read. When in the form of svmboR to be displayed on cars, thc pyinbois ghoald be placed one below the Other tind read downward. Theso signáis may bu withdrawu at 3 p. m.
