On the Cooper river, near Oakley, S. C, a large party of Negro laborers were being couveyed across to their homes in a Hat boat. Wlien the boat was in the middle of the stream a sloop, notwlthstanding the ampie room in the river, ran diiectly into the flat boat which was partially split open and four of the men were drowned. The jury of inqucst put the responsibility on Capt. l'olnsett of the sloop, who has been committcd to jail.
