The thriving village of Lake Linden, Iloughton county, was wiped out by fire on tiie 20th inst. The lire origlnated in tlie second story of Neuman & Trelease's general store, and andera siitt' wind swept everything before it. In two honra from the discover; of the fire the whole town was in ruina. Beginning at the place above mentioned the fire took everything to the school house on the outskirts, covering an arta oL ten or twi'lvo bloeks. Churches, stores and saloons were alike consumed, and DOthlng whatever of their contenta was saved. The town was convposêd of frame buildings and everything was go dry that tliey bnrned like tinder. The people were panic-stricken, and there being no adequate means of lighting the Bre they wcre ntterly lielpless.. The Houghton and Hancock liro departments arrlved as soon as possiblc. and through Ilicir effortS the property Of the Calumet & llecla uiining company, whlch was in the track of the fire, was saved. Wonls fail to picture the awful speed with whicli the tlanies swept through the doomed town. Families rushed from thölr homes to the street, saving unly the clothes on their backs. Hundreds of families are without bedding or clothing, except what they have on. No stores are left to furnish supplies, and Hancock and Houghton merchants are sending inattresses and bedding to the homeless people. Mr. Neuïnaii is in Kurope, and Mr. Trelease was in Calumet when the lire broke out. The loss is between 81,500,000 and 83,000,000, wliilc tho insurance will probably aniount to S'50,000. The fire destroyed :J50 buildings, iucluding all the business places and i" blocka wen? burned over. The outskirts of the town alone were saved.
