The animal commencement exercises of the Kerrvllle, Teun., academy were belng held in tlic large building occupièd by the school. A series of tableaus had bwn arrangcd, aiul when the curtain had been rung down on ihe second one. there were nbout a dozen young ladies on the Stage, whicli was vrry small. In tbe erowded eondition oL things a coal-oil lamp. whleu was hattglng on the wall, was thrown to the floor und exploded. The burnlng oil set lire to Miss jlaggie Long'8 dress, and in tho stampede which followed the ory of fire the yonng lady was bunicd to death. Raymond l'owlcr, yonnji merchanl ol Kerrvllle, made a herole eftortto save Miss Long but fallcÖ. Ilis hands and anus were severely burned. The andlence, wil ch niiinbered about three hundred, fled at the Bist alarm, and several ladies were seriously injured by belng knorkod down and trampled on. The stage and rear portlon of the building werp entirely consumed before the flamea could be got under control.
