The Mt. Vernon estáte, where the remuins of Washington lie entombed, has been enlarged by tho addition of a tract of thirty-three and one-half acres on the northeru side near the old Washington mansión. It was secured tbrouh the generosity of Jay Gould. While on hia way up the Potomac from Fortress Monroe recontly in bis yacht, Mr. Gould stopped at Mt. Vernou and was shown around the grounds. Ho expressed great interest in the place aud the admirable manner in which it is cared for. In the course of convorsation the superintendent remarked that the tract in qusstion was much needed to protect the property trom encroachment. Mr. Gould iminediately authorized the purchase of tbe land at hls expense and it has been bougbt and turned over tq the Alt. V eruon regenta. I The price paid is not known.
