Pilate's Sentence Upon Christ

A correspondent sends the following as a correct translation of the sentence of Pontius Pílate. He says this cuiious document was discoverecl in A. D. 1280, in the city of Aquill, in the kingdom of Naples, in the course of a seareh made for the discovery of Roman antiquities, and it remained there until it wx.s found by tbeOommissionaries of Art in tlie Frencli anny of Italy. Up to the time of the campaign in southern Italy it was preserved in the sacristy of the Carthusians, near Naples, where it was Uept in a box of ebony. Since then the relie has been kept in the Chapelo Casería. The Carthusians obtained, by petition, leave that the píate might be kept by them asan acknowledgnient of thesacriiïces which they had made for the Frenen anny. The Frenen translation was made literally by members of the Commission of Art. Denon had a fac-simiie of the plate engraved, which, on the sale of his cabinet was bought by Lord Howard for 2.890 francs: "Sentence pronounced by Pontius Pilate, Intendant of Lower Galilee, that Jesus of Na.areth shall suffer death by tho cross. In the seventeenthyear of the rejan of the Emperot Tiberius, and on the 2-"th of Maren, inthemost holy city of Jerusalem, durini the Pon tinca te of Annas and Caiaphás. Pontius Pílate, Intendant of the Pro vince of Lower Galilee, sittin in judument in the presidential chair of the praetor, sentences Jesus of N azare th to death on the cross betweén two robbers, as the numerous testimonies oí the people prove that - 1. Jesus is a misleauer. 2. He has excitedthe peoi p!e to sedition. 3. He is an enemy to the laws. 4. He calis Hinmelf the Son ! of God. 5. He calis Himself falst-ly the ! King of Israel. He went to the Tem1 plo, followed by a multitude carryini palins in their hands. It likewise orders the first Centurión, Quirilius Corneliufl, to brinj him to the place of e.ecution, and forbids all persons, rich or prtor, to prevent the execution cf Jesns. The witnesses whohavesigni'd the oxecution against Jesus are: 1. Daniel Robani, a Pharisee; 2. John Zorobabel; 3. Raphael Robani; 4. Capet. Finally it orders thst the said Jesus be taken out of Jerusalem through the gate of Tournea."
