The pope has blessed the palhum sent to Monsignor Richard, archbishop of Paris, and which is the insignia of his clerical elevation. The pallfum was originally a mantle thrown over the other garments, but it ia nowoniy the border of it, a sort of very open collar restint; on the shoulders, and consisting of a strip of white woolen material marked with black crosses, forming two short ends, one on the back, and one on the breast. The wool of which it is made 3 trom its origin consecrated by pontilicial benediction. It comes from two lauibs annually presented to the pope on the 21st of January in an ornamental basket blessed by him, and then intrusted to the puna oL St. Anes, who rear thern, and from their fleece weave the palliums. Before the vestment is given to a new archbishop it is temporarily placed on the tomb of St. Peter, and then sent or presented to the recipiƫnt. The pallium doea not descend to the successor.
