Uood Deacon lirĂ³n n. Thomas O'Brien, tlie confidenoe man, charged with having swindled ex-Sheriff D. B. Brown, of Ann Arbor, Mioh., out of 12,700 on May 28, and who was irrested in Chicago three weeks ago for ;hat offense, has been discharged f rom justody by Judge Altgeld. The prisoner aad been brought before Judge Altgeld, Aug. on a writ of babeas corpus, when the case was continued until Aug. 11 in $10,000 bonds his surety beiog Aid. Whelan. At 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning Judge Altgeld, O,Brien and bis lawyer, W. i. Forrest, and Atty. A. B. Jenks, repreaenting Brown, carne hito the criminal court. After court had been opened Jndge Altgeld said to Clerk Oetm un : "Make out a discharge for the prisoneer, O'Brien." This was done, and O'Brien walked forth a free man. When chief deputy sheriff Gleaaon was informed of the facts he was greatly surprised, said that it had been positively announced by the court, and so entered on the record, that the case would be heard this morning. Atty. Jenks was seen during the day by a reporter for The Times and asked liow the case happened to be settled in the manner stated. Mr. Jenks said: "Well, it haa been arranged to the satisFaction of everybody, I guexs." Chicago Times, Aug. 11. A $2,000,000 circus, when it comes down to paying taxes, can't show up above $GO,000.
