Gov. Richardson of South Carolina has commuted the sentence of Oxey Cherry the 13-year oíd girl con victed of murder anc tenteneed to be hansjed in September, to imprisonment iu the penitentiary for five years. The governor received a large numberof Communications irom the north and northwest plcading for mercy for the child, and asking that he wou ld not allow a bloody stain tobe putupon South Carolina and the United States by the hanging of an infant. He made a thorough exaraination of the case, and could fiml nothing but evidence of premeditated murder. The girl wasconvicted of killing a 2-year old white child by administering a dose of concentrated lye. 'Ihe governor appealed tothe judge who passed sentence for nis recoinmendation. The judge replied that a case of murder had been made out, but that on account of the tender age of the gin i.e thought she should not be hanged, but should be iiuprUoned for a ter ui of yeurs.
