The commissioner of patents bas ren. dered a decisiĆ³n to the effect tbat an ap plicatlon cannot embrace in one and the same application for letters patent more than ono distinct and teparato iuvention. The case decided is one in which the applicant soughtto patent both the machine and the procoss for separatinggarlic frora wheat. The commissioner holds that, in order to be patented, the process must not be merely the result of the cperation of the machino, but must havo an existence independent of the machine. This has been a long disputed question.
