Louisville Journal: One of the worst thinga about the dishonest tariff is its tendency to the production of inferior articlea. With no competition but that at home, our progresa must necessarily be slow. It is an insignificant nation that cannot stand up and take lts ohances with the world. Philadelphia Record: In 1867, when the high wool tariff went into effect, there were 5,117,148 sheep in the state of New York. Under the prostrating policy of taxing iniported wools the number of sheep in that state has been reduced to 1,579,866, and the price of wool is lower than it hos been in forty years. A booK of complaints is kept in the city hall of Boston, Mass. In it any one may enter a complaint of the officials ol the city government. Every morningthe complaints aie referred to the difieren! department, and a good many smal abusen and neglets nghted. Our city is not as large as Boston, but there are verj many things which migbt be bettered We do not mean to insinúate that our officials neglect their duties, but we all know that some of them would be better done if they knew the eyea of the people were upon them. Why would it not work in our city ? Each person would have to sign liis name to tbe complaint to testifj to its (jenuineuess. otherwise there mighi be some practical jokes played. Minister G. V. N. Lothrop to 8t Petersburg, says of the presidenta message: "He has not declared for pro tectiou or free trade. He bas declarec that tazatioa is s burden.
