A. Bronson Alcott, the well known philosophical writer, died in Boston March 4, aged !-8 years. Araos Bronson Alcott was born in Wolcott, Conn., Nov. 7, 17HS). U'hile yet a boy he was started upon a commercial career, but provine himself totally unfitted íor it by disposition. estahlished an infnnt jcliool, teuching by conversation, not books. He went to Boston in 1838 and bis school there became wídely known. He showpil singular sympathy and skill in his methodsof teaching youngchildren. Bnt his school was far in adrance of the tbought of the day and he gave it up and went to ('oncord. where he gare himself up to thestudy of natural tueology, reform in education, diet and civil and social institutions. Finally he went upon the leeture platform where he achieved greatsuccess. At one time he attempted to forma cominunity near Harvard. Mass., bnt the project failed. Afterward he led the life of a perijiatetic philsopher, conversing and writin; upon a wide range of practioal nnd ethiciil que tions. He has leen regarded as a leader in the transcendental style of thought, but in later years he was Haitned as a convert to orthodox Christianity. He jmlui lied several works beside-i numerouscontributions to periodical literature. He was the father of Louise M. Alcott, the uthor, and May Alcott (Mrs. Ernest Fierker), the artist.
