Miss I.ouisa M. Alcott die.l in Boston on the Öth inst. of brain fever. The shork of her father's death hastened her owu end. Louisa May Alcott was the daughter of Amos Bronson Alcott, thephüosopher and ■cholar, whose death preoe.ied that of liis daughter but a lew days. Míe was born in Germantown, Pa., in ls3i, and began to use her pen at an oarly asje. Her firs'c book, "Fairy Ta'e.s," wapublished in!855. During the war she was a hospital nurss, and in Ittttpublislieda volume of "Hospital Sketches," made up from letters she liad written to her family. '1 he same yeiir she became a contributor to the Atlantic Monthly. She pul ished several nove s, but her fama as a writer restsehiefly upon her widely readstories called "LlttleMea" and "Little VVomen" and "An Old Ka6hioned (!irl." Her later work included 'Jack and Jill" and ft series of short storio under the general tite of "Aunt Jo's Scrapbag." She was one of the most popular and successful writers for youngpeoplein the country, and she was nlways sure of a wide hearing from children of a larger growtl). ' ' Her writings commanded great admiration for their pure tona and moral teachings. _ One of the ladies present at a recent fancy postume ball in Denver wore aireas of white satín eonjpletely covered oviir with copies of a local newspaper.
