I was attracied yesterdav by a considerable gatnering of people in adowntown atreet, occasioned by a balky íorse wliich even the policeman hirnsi;lf could not persuádelo "moye on." All kind of plans were tried. Firsl, about a dozen men shovod the wagon behind; but even then, by firnily plantilla; his fore foet, tho detormined beast nianagcd to resist progression, although I thought the broeehmg would burst. Au old pieco of cloth was then carefully tied over his eyes, and, after a short pause, he was geutly requested to prooeed, but lio stoocl stil!, aud tb orowd jeered. Next a rather consequential per.son caine forward, and, standing on tiptoe, so that he could reach the horse's ear, wlnspered into bis ear something which ho evidently thought would havo an instantaneous and ïuiraculous effect; but tho animal was deaf.to this sireiii aml the cousequential personslunkoö', pursued by the sarcasnis of a bootblack. The driver was noff in a rage, whioh vented itself ia blows and iiuprecations. But just as ho was passiug from this condition into ono of stony despair, a quiet young fellow waved him aside. unhai-nussed the horse, took him out of tho sliafts, and aftor leading him across tho streel and back, reharncssed him and handed the rt'ins to the driver, who now drove off without the loast trouble. Tho expedient was simple but effective, and it sugijests what is, I believe, tme ]hilosophy of the balky horse. The efïbrt should bo not to overcomo his fixed idea of standing still, but to supplaut that molion by diverting his attention to soniething else.-
