A strange atmospherical phenomenon was witnessed at Maize, west of Wichíta, Kansas, the other morning. A torm cloud burst and extended over a space, parallelegram in forni, about 500 yarda wido and one mile in lensth. Por half an hour the rain carne down in torrente. The heavens were black and a darkness ahnost equal to that of night covored the entire área. People ran frightened from their homes, many crying that the end of the worid had come. Maize is situated on the south bank of the Arkansas river, and the streets were turned,into rivers which fortunately found outlets into the Arkansas. An eye-witnoss describes the rain as coming down in torrents, washing away a uumber of houses and nioving others from foundations. A house in which a family named Rookby lived was picked up by the floods and carried into the Arkansas river, where it sank, drowning Kockby, his wife and two children. A great many head of horses and cattle were drowned.
