I started on a lom ly road; A few companlons with me went; Some fell behind, some forward strode, Uut all on one highpurpoe bent; To live for nature, finding truth In beauty and tíie shrlne of art; To consécrate our joyous youth Toaims outslde the common mart I turned aside aml lingered long To pluck a rose, to hear a blrd; To muse, whilc lis ening to the song Of brooks through leafy covers heard; To live in thoughts that lirought no fame Orguerdon from the thoughtless crowd; To toil for end that could not claim The world's applauses, coarse and lom!. Uut still, though ort 1 bind my sheaf 1 11 fielcls my comrades have not known, Though art is long and life is brief, And youth lias now forever down, I would not lose the rapture sweet Nor scorn the toü of earlier years; Still would 1 climb with eager feet, Though towering height on he'ght appears.
