About 4 o'clock the other morning, the Mundine hotel in Kockdale, Texas, was found to be on lire, and was quickly all ablaze. Inside there were 13 persons, only two of whora escaped alive. Dr. W. A. Brooks, the proprietor, was pulled out of the burning building with hit hair and beard singad off, and otherwise badly burned, leaving behiud him hls wife and four ohildren, who perished. The mystery about the thing is that so iiuin.v should have perished whcu none were higher up than the second story, and there were gallerie and exitn on both sides of the building occupiod by the sleepers. No one was heard to cali or scream, all dying without a cry for help, though a great crowd quickly gathered and exhaustedevery effort to aflord a rescue. The remains of several have been recovered from the ruin, bt they are unrecog nizable. Mr. Pierce is the only non-resident victim. The hotel registor being burned, there ia no meaus of ideutifying the remains. Mutthew Arnold's will wa even shorter than that of Koscoe Conkling. In oue linr he left all he possessed to his wife.
