The regular monthly meeting of the common council was held last Monday evening, every member in tiis eat except Aid. Hammond. A commuiiication was read from E. B. Qidley, ex-secretary of the board of ticalth, rcciting tliat the city was indebteil to hltn for services $75, and that exMayor Smitli had assured liini at the time that his bilí would be paid. The commuiiication was received and placed on file. Petitions were received praying the council to order sidewalks laid on the east side of Fifth street, between Pontiac and North streets; on the east side of Thayer street, between Washington and North streete ; and in front of the Ami Arbor Agricultural Co. property in the Fifth ward. Referred to the sidewalk committee. Also petitions received from Wtn. Arnold and ten others, praying that Second street be opened up from Williams streel to Jefferson street. Referred to general street committee. Alse petition from Daniel Hiscock, In behalf of the T. & A. A. R. R., asking permission for the company to lay a sidewalk across High street. Referred to general street committee and city engineer. Also petition from Daniel Fletcher and 21 others, asking that a hydrant be placed at the corner of Elm and Brown streets. Referred to committee on fire department. Also petition from W. H. Mclntyre and 15 others, prayinjr tbat a stone culvert be built on Felch street over the mili race. Referred to general street committee. Also petition from A. D. Seyler, atatlng that an old dilapidated barn belonglng to Mrs. A. A. Terry, in rear of his house, corner of Liberty and Thompgon streets, encroached on the street, and requested the council to order it removed off the street. Referred to general street committee. A bilí was presented by City Attorney King, claiming $88.32 for services rendered. This bilí caused considerable fighting among the members, and on motion of Aid. Ware, a warrant was ordered drawn for $44.16, one-hulf of the amount claimed, in full for pame. A vea and nay vote was taken and Aid. Ware's motion was carried. W. Cheever for costa allowed against the city by the circuit court, $26, in the injunction case of Treadwell and others, was allowed, and warrant ordered. A bilí was received from the owner of tüe opera house for three year's reut of the raarket, $150, which was laid on the table. Od motion the bond of Gustave Roelim was ordered returned, and the marshal was ordered to secure another bondsmau on the bond of Millman & McNally. On motion of Aid. Wlnes, the D. K. B. society were allowed to cut down two trees in front of their premises on South átate street. The city attorney was ordered to draw up and present to the council an ordinance to proyide for the reporting of all deaths to the board of liealth. On motion of Aid. A new crosswalk was ordered laid on Detroit street, at the crossing of División, and on State street on the gouth side of Washington, to be pald from the general street fund. Heintzman fc Laubengayer were granted permission to occupy part of Washington street whlle building. The council then adjourned until Wednesday evenlng, June 20th, at 8 o'clock, when they meet to give the öecond itreet opening petitloners a hearing. County Clerk Howlett and family went to Lyndon on Haturday where they attended a reunión of the family and celebrated the golden wedding of Mr. 1 luwlett'a párente. The proposition to raise $5,000 by tax to pay the running expenses of the oity, was carried at the apeoial eleotion Monday, bat it was a oloae oonteet. Th vote etood 148 for the tax, and 140 against it.
