Levi P. Morton, the republican nomino for vice-president, was born in Shoroham, Vt., in 18:24. and his father was the Rev. Daniel Morton. From the age of 10 unt)i lie becaine of age he worked as a clerk in 9 small general store at Hanover, near hit birthplaco. Then he became a partner. Later he foundod the banking house of Morton, Bliss& Co., New York, and Morton, RoM & Co., London, England. In this businoss he made his fortune, which is said te be in the millions. In 1H76 Mr. Morton raij for congres in a New York city district and was defeated. In 1SS0, however, he was elected. Afterwards President Garfield appointcd him minister to the Frencb capital, where his immense fortune enabled him to make a brilliant social triumph. He is neither a man of great learning, nor a fine orator, but he is urbane, dignified and a thorough gentleman.
